Internal couplers are used in pipeline construction for support during welding. A pneumatic clamp is connected to an air compressor within the pipe joint that is to be welded to another pipe joint. The coupler moves inside the pipe, and the clamp expands using compressed air allowing the pipe to be held in position during welding. In some cases, for example during automatic welding, copper or ceramic shoes are used instead of standard shoes.
